I was not very familiar with Sam Barber going into this show. I had heard of his opener, Clover County, though, so I decided to check it out. Looking at the venue’s website beforehand, I was impressed to see Barber had scheduled two nights, both of which had been sold out well before the shows. It is not very often you see an artist pull off a two night run at this venue. I attended the first show on Thursday night.
Outside the venue, a long line stretched down the block with fans dressed in plaid shirts, jeans, short skirts, and plenty of cowboy hats. I also noticed fans of all ages in attendance, showing that Sam Barber has built a wide reaching fan base.
The evening started with Clover County taking the stage. Singer A.G. Schiano walked up to the microphone with her acoustic guitar. I was surprised that she did not have a full band with her at first. Schiano performed the first two songs solo before her guitarist joined her for the rest of the set.
Clover County is a country folk band based out of Athens, Georgia. Schiano’s songwriting delivers a relaxed, laid back style of country that makes for some really fun songs both lyrically and musically. The band released their album Finer Things in 2025, following their earlier EP Porch Lights in 2024.
On stage, Schiano’s songs sounded great even in the stripped down versions without a full band. She has a gentle and expressive voice, and when speaking to the crowd she carried a strong southern accent while introducing several songs. I thoroughly enjoyed Clover County’s set, with highlights including “Whiskey Cherry” and “Paradise Rd.” The audience matched the mood of the music, swaying back and forth quietly during much of the performance.
Sam Barber, who hails from Missouri, has gained much of his popularity through social media, much like many modern artists. He also auditioned for the twentieth season of American Idol and received a golden ticket to Hollywood, although his appearance ultimately did not air on the show. That did not slow Barber down. He continued building his career independently and has been gaining success ever since.
Barber’s breakout single “Straight and Narrow” helped expand his audience, and he has been selling out shows across the country. He has even performed at country music’s most legendary stage, the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
On my way to the show in Madison, I expected a fairly simple stage setup typical of many country shows. Instead, I walked into a surprisingly elaborate stage design that resembled a mountain landscape. The backdrop featured mountains and trees set against a sunset scene, while prairie grass, rocks, and lanterns filled the front of the stage, creating a rustic outdoor atmosphere.
When Sam Barber and his band finally hit the stage, the audience erupted into cheers. The band opened the night with “Streetlight” before moving into “Better Year,” which gained popularity after being featured on Yellowstone Season 5.
Since it was my first time hearing Barber’s music, I was pleasantly surprised by his sound. It leans toward a more authentic country and western style at a time when much of modern country leans heavily toward pop influences. Barber has a rich, powerful voice that stands out among many of today’s singers.
His band also sounded fantastic throughout the night, with one standout being fiddle player Luisa Marion. Her playing added a strong country western flavor to many of the songs.
About halfway through the set, Barber performed an acoustic version of “All For You” alone on stage. Shortly after, he was joined by Marion for a duet performance of “Restless Mind.” With just the two musicians on stage, it became one of the most memorable moments of the evening and the audience responded enthusiastically.
Overall, Sam Barber delivered an excellent performance with a set that ran just over twenty songs. Other highlights included his breakout hit “Straight and Narrow,” “Man of the Year,” and the encore closer “Indigo.”
Going into the show without having heard a single song from the headliner, I left genuinely impressed. Barber clearly has a passionate fan base, with many people singing along word for word throughout the night. Before the show even began, a line stretched across the venue as fans waited to purchase merchandise.
Sam Barber is definitely an artist I will be keeping an eye on, and I look forward to hearing more from him in the future. If you can secure tickets to one of his upcoming shows, many of which are already selling out, you can expect a great night of country music.
