Infected Rain’s Mutation Phase Invades Manhattan

The walls of the legendary Mercury Lounge shook Sunday night as Infected Rain brought their Mutation Phase U.S. tour into Manhattan alongside Stitched Up Heart. In a venue better known for indie rock up and comers than pulverizing modern metal, the packed crowd turned the Lower East Side spot into a sweat soaked collision of melody, aggression, and catharsis.

Stitched Up Heart opened the night with a set that felt far bigger than the room itself. Frontwoman Mixi commanded the stage with a balance of vulnerability and ferocity, moving effortlessly between soaring clean vocals and gritty intensity. Tracks like “Monster” and “Finally Free” landed with emotional weight, but it was the band’s chemistry with the audience that elevated the performance. Even between songs, Mixi carried herself with the kind of genuine charisma that has helped the band cultivate a fiercely loyal fanbase over the years. We were also pleasantly surprised to see New York’s own Alyxx join the band for a song.

By the time Infected Rain emerged under a wash of red lighting and industrial electronics, the Mercury Lounge had transformed into organized chaos. Led by the magnetic Lena Scissorhands, the Moldovan metal outfit delivered a crushing set that blurred the lines between nu metal groove, metalcore brutality, and atmospheric tension. Lena remains one of the most captivating frontpeople in heavy music today. One moment she was unleashing guttural screams with frightening precision, the next locking the audience into haunting melodies.

What made the show particularly exciting was the intimacy of the setting. Mercury Lounge’s small capacity created a rare closeness between band and audience with no barricades and no security, making every breakdown hit harder and every vocal line feel personal. During the heavier cuts, the floor erupted into nonstop movement as Lena encouraged circle pits on the already tight floor, while slower and moodier moments wrapped the room in near total focus. The band’s rhythm section thundered through the venue with surgical precision, but nothing overshadowed Lena’s commanding presence as she stalked the tiny stage like it was an arena.

The pairing of Stitched Up Heart and Infected Rain proved surprisingly perfect, with both bands bringing emotionally charged songwriting wrapped in explosive heaviness while still offering completely distinct identities. Stitched Up Heart leaned into melodic resilience and hard rock hooks, while Infected Rain pushed the night into darker and more experimental territory.

In an era where many heavy shows rely on oversized production and visual spectacle, this concert succeeded because of its rawness. No barriers, no gimmicks, just two powerhouse bands feeding directly off the crowd’s energy inside one of New York’s most intimate venues. For those lucky enough to squeeze into Mercury Lounge that night, it felt less like a concert and more like being trapped inside the storm itself.
