Review Of CHARMING LIARS’ ‘BARE BONES’ EP

2 mins read

Los Angeles band Charming Liars are building upon their 2019 breakout year with a 4-song acoustic EP, Bare Bones. I found this EP to be a solid and poignant performance, full of unexpected twists and turns. These stripped down songs really showcase the instrumental talent of Karnig Manoukian and Mike Kruger as well as the brooding, raspy vocals of Lead singer Killiyan Maguire.

As I listened to this EP I quickly realized that I would be doing a great disservice to the band by reviewing each track. This EP is essentially one song, one theme, cut into four beautiful chapters. If you listen to it with that in mind, this EP will move you, grab you and suck you into this story about a man caught in a failing relationship, desperately trying to escape. Killiyan spins this tale with the perfect amount of sadness in his voice. The background vocals come in at just the right time and bring perfect harmony to accentuate the angst.

I’m a big fan of acoustic versions and this EP did not disappoint. It’s a solid first rate performance from a great band! Please check out this beautiful story for yourself and you’ll come away with a new appreciation for great songwriting.

Deep in the Blue Mountains of Pennsylvania, you’ll find this guy, rocking out at his favorite campground. When not hosting a game of trivia at the famous “Cow Palace,” you’ll find him riding the nature trails in his custom golf cart, listening to music as diverse as Aerosmith, Cream and Pink Floyd, to Jane’s Addiction and Lenny Kravitz. It’s true, he probably shouldn’t be driving so fast with Parkinson’s Disease, but don’t tell him that. He’s been moving and shaking (get it??) to his own beat ever since he snuck out at age 15 to see George Thorogood & The Destroyers. So...if you find yourself lost in the woods some cold night, and hear the mournful sounds of “Folsom Prison Blues” echoing through the trees, make your way to the source. You’ll find a roaring campfire beside a gazebo. Pull up a camp stool and sit next to the guy with the cane. You’ll soon realize that’s not Johnny Cash he’s playing. That would be “Small Town Titans”, and he’d love to tell you about them! Stay awhile. Let’s talk music...
