Disturbed released Evolution on October 19, 2018. Recorded with producer Kevin Churko at the Hideout in Las Vegas, their seventh studio album gave acoustic songwriting a larger role in the band’s music. “A Reason to Fight,” a song offering encouragement to people facing addiction, became one of the clearest expressions of that approach.
The change began with the order in which Disturbed worked. Guitarist Dan Donegan told HEAVY that they had discussed acoustic ideas for years, but those plans repeatedly slipped aside once they plugged in and started writing heavier material. For Evolution, they addressed those ideas first. The quieter arrangements still carried difficult subjects, including depression and death, giving the band another way to approach experiences that had affected its members personally. A separate acoustic EP was considered, Donegan explained in a January 2019 interview with Guitar World. After developing five or six strong acoustic ideas, they returned to electric riffs and decided the material belonged together. That decision helped establish the album’s title.
Their listening habits on the road had also shifted. During the Immortalized touring cycle, drummer Mike Wengren’s backstage selections included Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Kansas and Toto. Speaking at the band’s iHeartRadio album release event, David Draiman explained that those records appealed to them because of the different feelings and musical dynamics they contained. Disturbed wanted to give their own album a similarly broad range.
The opening track reached much further into the band’s past. Donegan had written the musical foundation of “Are You Ready” in 2004, while Disturbed were developing Ten Thousand Fists. With enough material already available, he saved the idea and eventually rediscovered it while preparing Evolution. “This one just happened to take 14 years,” he told Guitar World. It became the album’s first single.
“A Reason to Fight” began with a rough idea Donegan sent Draiman. In the band’s release announcement, the singer explained that its subject connected with him through people he cared about who had experienced addiction. Donegan described the shame he had seen in people who felt they had disappointed themselves and those around them. The song was intended to offer encouragement through that daily struggle. Disturbed accompanied its release with international support resources, making help information part of the single’s presentation.
Loss also shaped “Hold On to Memories.” Discussing the song with Metal Hammer, Draiman pointed to the film Coco and its treatment of remembrance through the Day of the Dead. He spoke about losing friends and his grandmother, and about the importance of keeping their memories present. The album’s closing song, “Already Gone,” approached grief through the wish for more time with someone who had died and questions about whether they might meet again.
Those subjects became part of the conversation around the band’s performances. At the iHeartRadio release event, Draiman urged listeners to support people struggling with addiction and depression before another loss occurred.
In April 2019, Disturbed released an official live video for “A Reason to Fight” that included fans’ personal stories. They thanked participants for speaking openly and said they hoped those accounts would encourage others to reach out. Alongside the video, the band shared support resources and invited listeners to post photographs showing solidarity with people facing those struggles.
