Smash Mouth were given three hours to make Slipknot’s “Duality” sound like a song they could have written themselves. The assignment comes from Musora’s Covers On The Spot series, which documents the band developing an arrangement before performing the finished version.
Published October 30, the episode features vocalist Zach Goode and his bandmates working through the challenge in the studio.
“Duality” originally appeared on Slipknot’s 2004 album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses). Putting it in the hands of the band behind “All Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun” gives this session its unusual starting point. Musora’s brief specifically asks Smash Mouth to approach the song through their own musical identity.
Smash Mouth already have a prominent cover in their catalog with “I’m a Believer.” Here, the episode also makes the arranging process part of the performance, moving from an initial listen into discussion and work on the cover before the band plays its version.
The complete video runs just over 15 minutes and includes the musicians reflecting on the experience afterward. For viewers heading straight to the result, the finished performance begins at 9:47.
