Darius Rucker Brings Summer Vibes to Penn Heroes Stage

2 mins read

Country music fans were treated to a memorable summer evening when Darius Rucker’s Songs of Summer Tour rolled into Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Grantville on June 5. Joined by opening acts Austin Williams and George Birge, Rucker delivered a hit-filled set that blended country favorites, Hootie & the Blowfish nostalgia, and a few surprises that made the night feel like a celebration rather than just another concert.

The excitement surrounding the performance was evident long before the first note was played. The show ranked among the three highest-selling concerts in the history of the venue, a testament both to Rucker’s enduring popularity and the strong demand for live country music in central Pennsylvania.

Austin Williams kicked off the evening with an energetic set that quickly won over the early-arriving crowd. His easygoing stage presence and modern country sound set the tone for the night, showing why he’s becoming a rising name on the country touring circuit.

George Birge followed and kept the momentum rolling. Birge’s charismatic performance connected immediately with the audience, who responded enthusiastically to his mix of radio-friendly hits and heartfelt storytelling.  George’s style reminded me of Luke Bryan.   Funny, because George actually has a song with Luke titled “Ride, Ride, Ride”, which he played at the show.  By the end of his set, many fans who may have arrived primarily for Rucker had clearly become Birge fans as well.   His performance was definitely a surprise highlight of the show.

As the sun faded and the Penn Heroes Stage lights came alive, Darius Rucker took the stage to a roar from the near-capacity crowd. From the opening notes, Rucker showcased the warm, unmistakable voice that has made him one of country music’s most recognizable performers. His set balanced country chart-toppers with fan-favorite Hootie & the Blowfish classics, creating a soundtrack that spanned multiple generations of listeners.

Rucker’s relaxed, conversational style made the large outdoor venue feel intimate. Between songs, he joked with the audience, shared stories, and repeatedly expressed his appreciation for the fans who have followed him through both his rock and country careers. Whether performing upbeat singalongs or more reflective ballads, he maintained a genuine connection with the crowd throughout the evening.

One of the night’s biggest highlights came late in the set when Rucker welcomed Austin Williams and George Birge back to the stage. The trio joined forces for a spirited cover of Hank Williams Jr.’s “Family Tradition,” turning the performance into an all-out party. Fans enthusiastically sang along to every word as the three artists traded lines and shared the spotlight. It was one of those special live moments that perfectly captured the camaraderie among the tour’s performers and brought the audience to another level of excitement.

The evening culminated with the kind of crowd-wide singalongs that have become a hallmark of a Darius Rucker show. By the final notes, thousands of fans were on their feet, singing, dancing, and soaking in the first true feeling of summer.

More than just a concert, the night felt like a gathering of friends brought together by great songs and great performers. Austin Williams and George Birge proved they belong on bigger stages, while Darius Rucker once again demonstrated why he remains one of country music’s most enduring and beloved live entertainers. Judging by the record-setting attendance and the energy throughout the venue, fans left feeling they had witnessed one of the marquee events in the history of the Penn Heroes Stage.

There are still lots of opportunities to catch Darius Rucker on this tour. Note, the opening acts are different for each show.
