GWAR are joining Mutant Football League 2 as the Antarctica Scumdogs, a playable team arriving in a new expansion this October. The collaboration with developer Digital Dreams Entertainment puts the band’s stage characters on the field, with their own stadium built around GWAR’s mythology.
For Digital Dreams president Michael Mendheim, the announcement answers a request he has heard repeatedly from the game’s audience. “MFL fans have been asking me for years, ‘When are you going to get GWAR into the game?’” he said in the developer’s announcement. The studio is designing the Scumdogs around physical aggression, making their ability to damage the opposition central to the team.
Blöthar the Berserker, Beefcake the Mighty and Bonesnapper are among the seven GWAR characters named for the roster. The Antarctica setting also connects to the band’s fictional history, in which the Scumdogs were frozen beneath Antarctic ice before becoming a metal band. GWAR have shared an announcement trailer introducing the collaboration.
They will enter a game where cheating is already part of the playbook. Mutant Football League 2 lets teams bribe referees and use weapons, while stadium hazards include land mines, buzzsaws and mutant worms. Players can also build their own teams and design fields with strategically placed dangers. Those mechanics give GWAR’s elaborate costumes and theatrical violence a setting that already operates by similar rules.
The band’s connection to video games stretches back to the 1994 Beavis and Butt-Head game, whose central objective involved getting the cartoon duo to a GWAR concert. As NME recounts, their music subsequently appeared in Guitar Hero 5 and Backyard Wrestling 2. Antarctica Scumdogs expands that relationship by giving players control of the band’s characters as a football team.
The expansion will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam.
