Shinedown Confront Mortality in “How Did You Love”

Shinedown released “How Did You Love” as the fourth single from Threat to Survival on October 4, 2016. Written by Brent Smith and Scott Stevens, the song asked listeners to consider how they had lived and what they would leave behind. It had first appeared on the band’s fifth studio album, released September 18, 2015.

Co-writer and producer Scott Stevens traced the idea to an unsettling source. In a 2024 interview with 100% ROCK Magazine, he recalled watching a documentary about Adolf Hitler and considering the emptiness of power without love. That thought eventually became a question he was singing at his piano. When his wife asked what he was working on, Stevens realized that his initial wording, “How do you love?” needed to look backward. The past tense asked someone to consider the life they had already lived.

Changing the wording created a musical problem. Stevens felt the original phrase sang more easily; “How did you love?” needed an extra beat. He discussed that difficulty with Brent Smith, whose precise, forceful singing made the revised line work. They finished the song together, and Stevens produced the band’s recording. He recalled feeling the pressure of handling a project larger than anything he had produced before.

Smith was talking about the song’s meaning before the album reached listeners. In an August 2015 interview with Lisa Sanchez at KLAQ, he described thinking about the certainty of death and what people choose to do with the time they have. “What do you want people to remember about you?” he asked. He connected that question to whether someone had given more than they took and loved more than they hated. In Smith’s explanation, the title asked listeners to judge how they had lived, including the effect their choices had on other people.

The intention was to encourage action. In comments published by Blabbermouth when the video premiered, Smith said the song was meant to make people recognize the opportunity to live fully. He acknowledged that choosing positivity could be harder than giving in to negativity, and included the way people treated themselves among the questions worth asking. Letting go of hate was part of that reckoning.

The video placed those ideas against scenes of instability. Band performances in a sepia-toned warehouse were intercut with surreal imagery, including collapsing walls. It also used footage from The Hound of Heaven, a film directed by N. D. Wilson and executive produced by Hisao Kurosawa.

An acoustic version followed in January 2017, offering another arrangement of a song that had begun at Stevens’ piano. Shinedown released the recording through their official YouTube channel as the original continued its run at rock radio.

In 2017, “How Did You Love” became Shinedown’s 11th No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart. It was the third song from Threat to Survival to reach the top, following “Cut the Cord” and “State of My Head.”
