Dave Mustaine Says Political Lyrics Can Divide Fans

1 min read

Dave Mustaine says musicians risk dividing their audience when their lyrics reveal their politics. The Megadeth frontman criticized cancel culture during an interview with Hakos Pervanidis on TV War, arguing that public hostility has made speaking openly more difficult.

Pervanidis asked whether a young Mustaine could express himself as freely in the present climate as he did during the band’s early years. Mustaine’s answer focused on what happens when listeners decide which political camp an artist belongs to. “You’ve just halved your audience,” he said, according to Blabbermouth’s transcription. He argued that identifying with one side can turn listeners on the other against a musician.

Mustaine also objected to people exposing someone else’s voting choices. In his view, a private decision has become another reason for public antagonism. He contrasted that behavior with his experience of Megadeth’s audience, saying he does not believe the band’s fans take pleasure in hurting other people.

His resistance to political labels predates this interview. During a February appearance on Roisin O’Connor’s Good Vibrations podcast, reported by Blabbermouth, he rejected the assumption that he belongs to the political right. “I’m an independent,” he said, explaining that he has voted for candidates from both major American parties.

Back in the TV War conversation, Mustaine described sharing his difficult upbringing and efforts to improve his life with listeners. He said fans regularly tell him that “In My Darkest Hour” helped them through a crisis.

One encounter had surprised him. Mustaine recalled meeting a classical violinist who used a wheelchair after losing her legs in an incident involving a train. She told him that “Train of Consequences” was her song, giving a Megadeth title a personal significance he had not anticipated.
