Maria Brink has named her first solo project Maria Brink’s Coven and outlined where it fits into In This Moment’s plans. The singer intends to release it between the band’s ninth album, Witch, and its next studio record.
Speaking with Rock Sound backstage at Louder Than Life, Brink explained that working separately would also create more time for her partnership with guitarist Chris Howorth. She said the project would give them “some extra time to really perfect the next In This Moment album.” Howorth added that they were already developing ideas for another record, even with Witch newly released.
Brink’s interest in solo work predates Coven by several years. In a December 2017 interview with Metal Hammer, she described the appeal of writing quieter music that would sit outside the creative partnership she shared with Howorth. She was beginning to write without a firm schedule, imagining percussion built around tribal drums and music that would probably avoid distorted guitars. At that stage, her goal was to explore “the obscure, intimate, quiet side of me.”
The performance she pictured was similarly spare: herself at a piano, a single dress and a stage filled with candles. She explained that the solo piano moments within In This Moment’s shows were especially meaningful to her, and that she wanted to experience that connection across a full set.
She subsequently performed a solo piano lounge set on the 2020 ShipRocked cruise. Her selections included songs by Radiohead and Billie Eilish alongside In This Moment material, performed without other musicians backing her. That appearance offered an earlier example of the smaller scale performance she had discussed.
In This Moment released Witch on August 28, 2026, through Better Noise Music. With that record out, Coven now has a place in Brink’s release plans. She did not specify a release date or format in the Rock Sound interview, or say whether the project would follow the musical approach she described in 2017.
