When thinking of music out of Athens, Georgia, REM and the B-52s may come to mind, but you’re in for a big surprise. Athens-based Lullwater has been around for about a decade and they have brought back rock ‘n’ roll with a grunge vibe. One of their singles is a cover of “Release” by Pearl Jam. This was the song that got them noticed and pushed them to be more than just one of the best bands in the South.
They went to New Orleans, LA to record their latest album, Voodoo, which is set to be released on February 22 and it is so good. To promote the album, Lullwater has scored the chance to be on the road right now with the hottest tour around- Sevendust, Tremonti, and Kira. These bands have taken the music world on the road with nothing but rock ‘n’ roll on their minds. The tour’s first stop was in Houston, TX and the band Blacktop Mojo showed up to show their support. In fact, they even played with Lullwater. Let’s face it, bands like Blacktop Mojo, Joyous Wolf, and Lullwater are bringing back good old rock ‘n’ roll and it is fabulous. Voodoo brings a good feel to anyone that listens. The fans of Lullwater will not be disappointed and there will be new fans made.
Voodoo begins with “Curtain Call” it’s a loud, hard-driving, guitar track that will send tingles down your spine. This song will make you take notice of what rock is all about. Rhythm guitarist and vocalist, John Strictland, has a voice that could be considered the best in rock at this present moment. The rest of the band consists of bassist and vocalist Roy ‘Ray’ Beatty, vocalist and drummer Joseph Wilson, and lead guitarist Daniel Binnie. This is Lullwater and they rock!
Another song on the upcoming album is “This Life” which begins with an amazing drum solo. The drum solo is apparently making a huge comeback. The guitars come in like a lion and the bass keeps the quick pace of the song going. The lyrics are good and are catchy. The end of the song is abrupt. It rocks.
“Fight For Your Life” comes in hard and welcoming. The lyrics are full of truth and are heartfelt. This is a song that will easily become a favorite. Strong drums and an even stronger voice will make you sing along. This song is one of the great ones.
The last track, titled “Suffer Not,” ends this fantastic album. This is a slower melody with softer vocals that makes your skin crawl. It has a slow beginning with beautiful guitar and drum beat. There is a harshness that then comes in with guitars but then softens with a violin which adds to his dream-like voice. The addition of strings to this song is composing perfection. The hard- thriving guitar that comes in intermittently throughout matches the changing tone of the vocals beautifully. The guitar solo is incredible, clean, and just what any guitarist strives to become. Binnie is truly one of the best guitarists since John 5. This song comes with a strong ending to a masterpiece of an album.
Lullwater is a band that continues to develop music that is rock and grunge rolled into one. Voodoo is their best album to date. The entire album is composed and mastered to perfection. This Athens band is here to stay for at least another ten years. If you want rock ‘n’ roll with heart, look no further. Voodoo is a must have album for any music fan. Pick up their album when it’s release later this month and be sure to check out their live show out too, for you will not be disappointed!
