London, UK – For UK fans, Breaking Benjamin’s return to London wasn’t just another tour date, it was the end of an almost decade long wait. The Pennsylvania born rock band finally took to the stage at O2 Academy Brixton on 17 July, presenting a performance that reminded everyone why they’ve remained one of modern rock’s most beloved bands.
From the opening notes of “I Will Not Bow,” the atmosphere sent a ripple through the venue. The sold out crowd sang every lyric with such strength that it was magical to witness. It was clear that it came from years of waiting for their return. Benjamin Burnley’s vocals were as powerful and emotionally charged as ever, shifting between spellbinding melodies and raw aggression, while the band sounded remarkably tight throughout the 80-minute set. It was also beautiful to see Benjamin’s 11 year old son Benjamin Jr joining his dad on lead vocals for the set. Seeing the power of music be passed down through generations was so special to witness and it was such a bonding experience for father and son and something they can treasure and do together.
The setlist was expertly paced, balancing classics like “Until the End,” “Breath,” “So Cold,” “Blow Me Away,” and the set closing “The Diary of Jane” with newer material including “Awaken” and “Something Wicked.” Every song was met with incredible levels of crowd participation, turning Brixton into one enormous singalong. Rather than feeling nostalgic, the performance felt truly timeless, which is proof that Breaking Benjamin’s music still hits just as strong as it ever has.
Visually it was understated but effective. Sweeping lights and dramatic colour changes complemented the band’s dark, atmospheric sound. The sole focus remained firmly on the songs and the connection between the band and their packed out Brixton Academy crowd.
Support acts Return to Dust and Chevelle did an excellent job warming up the crowd and even the sweltering conditions of the venue couldn’t dampen the mood. Burnley thanked the audience for making the final night of the European tour so memorable, and the affection between band and fans was unmistakable. Every chorus was louder than the last, every guitar riff met with fists punching their, and every gap between songs was filled by thousands of voices refusing to let the moment end.
Breaking Benjamin’s long awaited return to London was everything fans had hoped for. It was emotional, powerful and unforgettable. Hopefully, after a reception like this, the band won’t leave it another nine years before coming back.
