The former Fame on Fire guitarist launches his new band with debut single “I Can’t Save Myself.”
A year after leaving Fame on Fire, Blake Saul is introducing the band he spent that time building.
That band is noplace., whose debut single, “I Can’t Save Myself,” arrived September 25. For Saul, an original member and guitarist of Fame on Fire, the release follows more than a decade of writing, recording and performing with his former band.
In his introduction to Rock Documented, Saul explained that he and Fame on Fire separated last September. He spent the following year developing noplace., taking a new project from its beginnings to its first release.
The band’s biography describes a direction that combines hyperpop’s electronic experimentation with the hooks and heavier guitars of modern rock. Post-hardcore and emotional pop also figure into that approach, with an emphasis on vulnerable songwriting, distorted production and large choruses.
Helping develop that sound is executive producer Matthew Marino, a longtime Fame on Fire collaborator. The official video credits Marino, Kodeblooded, Mike Pepe and Saul as producers of “I Can’t Save Myself.” Marino’s broader writing and collaboration credits include MOD SUN, Charlotte Sands, blackbear and Wes Ghost.
That established creative relationship gives noplace. a familiar foundation as Saul pursues what the band’s biography calls something “more experimental and emotionally unpredictable.” It is an ambitious brief for a debut: connect the immediacy of rock songwriting with the fragmented, heavily processed world of hyperpop.
