Tony Iommi has released From The Dark, his first solo album since 2005’s Fused, through BMG on October 23, 2026. The Black Sabbath guitarist is marking its arrival with a new lyric video for opening track “Over The Violent Sun,” introducing a record he built around a consistent group of musicians.
Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande sings throughout and shares writing credits on all eight songs, with Becky Baldwin on bass and Karl Brazil on drums. Iommi produced the album with Mike Exeter, his longtime collaborator, while Queen guitarist Brian May contributes a solo to “Death Wake.”
That lineup emerged after Iommi reconsidered what he wanted to make. Speaking with WMMR’s Brent Porche ahead of the release, he explained that he initially planned an instrumental album and had already recorded several tracks. He then put those aside and began writing riffs with a vocalist in mind. Once Lande joined the sessions, they worked through the material together, adjusting verses and choruses as the songs developed.
The schedule gave them room to reconsider those ideas. Iommi worked at his home studio, without a tour deadline dictating when the record had to be finished. He and Exeter generally set aside Mondays and Tuesdays, moving sessions when other commitments intervened. Iommi described a relaxed process that allowed him to spend time with the material instead of racing through recording before heading back on the road.
Lande was already a familiar voice. He had performed with Iommi at the 2010 High Voltage Festival tribute to Ronnie James Dio, and the guitarist remembered both his singing and how well they got along. Iommi told Apple Music that he wanted Lande to write his own lyrics so he could commit fully to what he was singing. He admired the aggression in the singer’s delivery and his ability to communicate a song, qualities that helped determine the direction of the record.
May’s appearance grew out of another established relationship. Iommi told Rolling Stone that he played his friend a couple of songs at his home studio, where May recorded his contribution to “Death Wake.” Iommi offered him another track, but May felt the existing guitar solos already did the job. Keeping the guest list small was intentional. “I wanted to keep it basically like a band,” Iommi explained.
The writing also left room for a surprise within the album’s closing song. “Legacy” includes an acoustic solo, something Iommi told Rolling Stone he chose because it would be unexpected. In his Apple Music interview, he named it his favorite track and revealed that Lande had written its lyrics about him. Iommi hadn’t realized that until the singer discussed it in an interview. What initially drew him to the song was its feel and the way its sections moved.
From The Dark is available through Iommi’s official release page. Alongside the standard eight songs, the deluxe CD adds “Scent Of Dark” and “Deified.” Physical editions include double vinyl cut at 45 rpm and a deluxe CD media book with a 32 page booklet.
