Burn Eternal have one song out in the world, but Howard Jones already knows what the next record could sound like. Adam Dutkiewicz told Jai “Jaimunji” Setright of Metal on Tap that he’s written enough music for a second album and passed it along to his former Killswitch Engage bandmate. “When he writes the lyrics, we’ll start working on it together,” Dutkiewicz said.
Jones had much the same freedom on the first record. Dutkiewicz wrote the music during the pandemic for his own sake. It found a singer when Jones asked his old friend if he had any songs he could sing over. Jones worked up lyrics and vocal melodies with a friend in Connecticut, then sent his demos back to Dutkiewicz. Sometimes the guitarist heard a chorus the two could improve together. Other times, what Jones sent him was exactly what the song needed.
One of the earliest pieces Dutkiewicz wrote was “Wounds I’ve Made,” the duo’s debut single. Jones used it to write about owning past mistakes and recognizing when a relationship has run its course.
“Wounds I’ve Made” opens the nine song Burn Eternal, due February 26, 2027, through Metal Blade Records. That long gap between writing and release helps explain how far ahead Dutkiewicz is. By May, while the duo were still sorting out a record deal and artwork for their debut, he’d already started writing the music Jones now has in hand.
