On a Tuesday evening rock band Phish made their return to the Kohl Center in Madison WI. The back to back show Tuesday and Wednesday night marked the bands first show in Madison since 1998. The Madison shows also kicked off the “Summer Tour 26” that runs through labor day.
The Kohl Center was packed with a fans wearing Phish tshirts and Tie die shirts. One thing I learned is that most Phish fans are pretty hardcore. Many fans traveling from many parts of the US to see the show. Also many fans seeing the band for their 50th and even higher amount of times. Many will follow the band around to see multiple shows. Many also purchased to 2 night ticket to see the band both nights of the Madison stop.
Jam band Phish which was founded in 1983 has become one of, if not the top jam band of all time. The band blends many genres of music to create a unique sound. Also no Phish show is gonna sound the same as the band goes off into improvisation on each song. Leaving each show with its own uniqueness. Most songs are very extended due to the band just jamming out. Like the song “Fuego” neared thirty minutes of straight out jamming. Leaving fans to get lost in the music. Some songs get jammed out so long you just get lost in the music and forget which song it even was till it comes back around to singing.
Phish jammed out on stage for over three hours, they had 2 sets with an intermission in between. The first set started out with “Chalk Dust Tortue” and closed with “Character Zero”. Set two started with “Run Like an Antelope” the second set was a much more experimental feeling than the first, and every bit as great!. Phish closed out the evening with an encore playing “Slave To The Traffic Light” and “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.”. The bands lighting was very cool, and they sounded excellent live. Leaving fans looking forward to a totally different set the following night and hoping the band returns to Madison much sooner than last time.
