Chris Motionless was born on October 17, 1986, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Born Chris Cerulli, he became the vocalist and a songwriter for Motionless in White, developing a writing style that accommodated fictional horror, anger and personal reflection. His work on “Masterpiece,” from the band’s 2022 album Scoring the End of the World, illustrates that more vulnerable side.
Singing had not been his original ambition. In a 2022 Metal Hammer interview, Chris recalled learning Metallica songs on guitar and drums and trying piano. “I didn’t want to be a singer,” he said. That changed when friends in a Metallica tribute band called Thunderhead needed someone to take the microphone. He agreed on the condition that he could play guitar as well, and his first performance as a vocalist included “Creeping Death.”
The group that became Motionless in White came together in 2004 and adopted its name on January 1, 2005. Chris said other people began calling him Chris Motionless after that change. The makeup and black clothing also predated the band, having been part of his appearance in high school.
On the band’s 2010 debut album, Creatures, Chris helped make the audience part of the songwriting. Recorded with producer Andrew Wade, the album included a title track built from lyrics submitted by fans. Chris explained in a 2018 Metal Hammer interview that he had avoided giving contributors a single prescribed subject. Instead, he identified recurring themes and connected them into a story. The process gave listeners a direct contribution to a record dedicated to them, establishing a relationship that extended beyond attending shows or buying an album.
His own lyrics also drew on characters whose experiences he could inhabit. For “Abigail,” he wrote from John Proctor’s perspective in The Crucible, using the play’s account of the Salem witch trials as the basis for the song. He moved toward his own views and experiences on 2012’s Infamous, then combined those approaches on 2014’s Reincarnate. Discussing that album with Metal Hammer, Chris explained that fans had missed the fictional storytelling. “Dark Passenger” returned to that method through the perspective of television’s Dexter, while other songs addressed subjects he wanted to confront personally.
The band’s willingness to make room for melody became especially important with “Another Life,” released on 2019’s Disguise. Speaking to Loudwire Nights in June 2022, Chris said the song connected with listeners across the heavier and more melodic sides of their audience. He felt its reception helped fans embrace the band’s range and made the response to “Masterpiece” easier to understand.
Chris also described how his emotional state affected the writing. During the pandemic, anger helped direct his work on “Slaughterhouse,” while “Masterpiece” emerged from a darker, more reflective period. Both appeared on Scoring the End of the World. He could approach a session with a particular kind of song in mind, but believed the strongest results often followed the feelings he was actually experiencing.
“Masterpiece” subsequently became Motionless in White’s first No. 1 at Active Rock radio in 2022, giving one of Chris’s most openly reflective performances a significant place in the band’s recording history.
