Scranton, PA – Friday night at Montage Mountain felt less like a nostalgia stop than a reminder that Billy Idol still knows exactly how to hold a crowd. At 70, he moved through the performance with the same swagger and instinct for interaction that helped make him an icon, keeping fans on their feet from the opening song.
That connection showed itself almost immediately when Idol spotted someone in the front row and handed them a drumstick without hesitation. It was a small moment, but one that made the size of the venue disappear for the fan receiving it.
The stage-ready wardrobe changes were every bit as unmistakable as the songs, with leather, metal hardware and shoulder spikes appearing throughout the night. Guitarist Steve Stevens even joked about the danger of getting too close to Idol while long metal spikes extended from his shoulders.
The clothes changed, but the confidence never did.
Idol carried each look with the same self-assurance that has followed him from “Dancing With Myself” through more than four decades of music. He may have gotten older, but the voice, attitude and anthemic presence that made him one of the defining performers of the 1980s have lost none of their identity.
What stood out most was how little the performance depended on nostalgia alone. The familiar snarl, raised fists and unmistakable image were all there, but Idol never treated the evening like a walk through the past. He remained engaged with the audience and gave Montage Mountain a performance that felt alive in the present.
By the time the night ended, there was little question why Billy Idol still commands stages at 70. The years may have passed, but the rebel yell has lost none of its bite.
